| THE MAD DASH
Sometimes at the house, it’s the aftermath
of energized walks that brings out the cub
in Lex. More often it’s the afterbath,
though, that full body shake-out and the rub-
down that fuels him. He snatches at the towel,
has a chew, splays his front legs. His haunches
high, his head swivels left, right. His play growl
reports he’s good to go. Then he launches
with head lowered and earflaps tight, to scud
through the living room. The coffee table,
ottoman, blue chair – with nary a thud,
he flies around them all. Then my sable-
coated comet, his third orbit complete,
comes back down to earth and lands at my feet.
